LEGO Table DIY

(Daddy DIYs)

The 2 older monkies have come to outgrow their long-serving IKEA table. And it comes complete with battle scars accumulated over the past 5 years or so.

Pretty much war-torn condition.

But it's still in a pretty usable condition actually so rather than dumping it, I thought why not convert it into something useful. And in the process, let the boys have a hand in the conversion as well.

Since they are in their LEGO/KRE-O phase nowadays, I decided to make a LEGO table out of it.

Naturally, the boys were only too eager to lend their helping hands. Which was a good thing - because it meant I didn't have to remove those pesky stickers (which had since long formed a bond with the wooden surface) all by myself.

Nothing like barking out orders and watching them do the dirty work while I snap away. Heh.

And when most of the stickers were peeled away, we proceeded to smoothen the wooden frame with sandpaper.

Finally, it was time to lay the LEGO Base board next!

We bought two 38cm x 38cm LEGO base plates, which were more than enough. I had to cut up one of the base plate so that the entire table top could be nicely covered. And Ash helped me apply the glue to stick them on.

Ta-dah! There we have it - our very own DIY LEGO table!

And once the glue had dried,  it was overrun with all their self-built play things in the shortest possible time.

Hmmm... Only problem is, I would have a headache should Ale want some play space for her LEGO Friends playsets next time. Oops.

The beach will do just fine

No comments :
(Daddy sun-bakes)

I had originally wanted to bring the 2 boys to try out the Double FlowRider at the Wave House, Sentosa over the weekend. Alas, when we got there around noon time, the next available session was in the evening at 7.30pm!

Erm, no way was the wifey & I going to wait that long and risk triggering the restless function in our monkies.

So we did the next best thing.

We let them run loose at Siloso Beach.

I must say it had been quite a while since we last hit the beach, so it wasn't any wonder that the 2 boys were delirious at spending the afternoon with sand between their toes.

The wifey & I were pleasantly surprised to find the beach rather clean actually; in fact the water was pretty clear too! Well, of course it wasn't the postcard-worthy sort of blue tinged sea but it will do just fine.

In all honesty, I don't think the colour or clarity of the sea mattered much to the boys.

They were just bent on enjoying themselves to the fullest.

And have I mentioned that they went absolutely bonkers at the beach?

I guess I did. Heh.

And where was Ale all this while???

At some water feature, a few steps away from the beach.

You see, she absolutely detests the sand. And will immediately scream blue murder if her delicate tiny toes came ever so close to those grains.

Well, I do hope it is temporary. At least her 2 brothers went through the same phase, and look at them now.

And being the nice brothers that they are, the 2 boys took some time off their busy beach schedule to entertain the little diva too.

But I'm sure it was because they wanted to wash off the sand from their bodies as well. :P

Although things didn't go according to plan, the monkies still had their share of splashing fun in the end. And when there's water, there will always be laughter from them. Because the beach will do just fine.

Or in Ale's case, jet sprays of water will do just fine as well.

Errr... but that's not to say they had stopped bugging me about the FlowRiding session at the Wave House! Luckily, I had already pre-booked a session for a later date and time. Phew!

Travelling with Kids - What to bring

6 comments :
(Daddy compiles)

I have been receiving a few emails from Daddies & Mummies alike, asking what sort of gear do we pack for our holiday trips. So in light of the upcoming NATAS Travel Fair, I thought why not share our To-Bring list for our travels with everyone.

Personally, I feel the need (and temptation) to lug as many things as possible for a holiday trip with kids comes at the time when the child is between 1 to 3 years old. It is also perhaps the most taxing period for travelling as well. Infants are relatively easy while those beyond 3 years of age can be reasoned (coupled with a generous dose of patience!) or bribery/blackmail/intimidation if all else fails. Heh.

On with the list then!

1. FIRST AID KIT

Sickness and accidents do happen, especially with young children around. The last thing we would want is to be caught off-guard with any emergencies while in a foreign land, so these are the first things that always go into our luggage.

  • Medicine - For trips lasting more than 4 nights, we would usually purchase a 'travel-pack' from our family doctor and this pack would contain medicine for fever, running nose and cough. Depending on the country that we are visiting, we would sometimes bring along medicine for diarrhoea and constipation as well.
  • Digital Thermometer - to take my own temperature if the kids make my blood boil.
  • Breathe Right Nasal Strips or Vicks - in case the kids' get clogged up at night and cause great distress. I think the distress part refers to us parents.
  • Insect Repellent - if only it repels those pesky touts too.
  • Sun Screen lotion - at least SPF50 for us.
  • Lip Balm for kids
  • Plasters
  • Nappy Rash cream
  • Hand Sanitizer

2. FOOD

Compared to her 2 brothers, Ale is one big snack monster. Which is probably a good thing, since we are able to shut her up by piling her with all her fave snacks.

  • Milk powder - The nightmare of lugging tins and tins of milk powder on our holiday trips begins when Ale stops her breastfeeding. So for now, I just have to remember to bring the wifey along.
  • Pediasure Milk Powder - As a precaution however, we bring along a tin of Pediasure. Just in case any of the kids suffers a loss of appetite or falls sick during the trip.
  • Milk Feeding accessories - Milk bottles, milk dispenser containers, bottle brush, detergent & thermos flash for hot water.
  • Cereal & Jar food - The cereal is usually for breakfasts, and the jar food is on standby in case we can't find any suitable food for Ale during our travels.
  • Cutlery for meals - A pair of spoon & fork, and also a plastic container.
  • Bibs - We hardly use them, but just thought it might be useful to include it into the list.
  • Noodle Cutter - This ranks as one of our most important item on the list. This comes in very handy for noodle dishes, and also for cutting those long strands of vegetables.
  • Biscuits, gummies, and other snacks - to keep them quiet
  • Water bottle - knock them on the head to keep them quiet. Just kidding.

3. ESSENTIAL BABY GEAR

Enough said.

  • Books & Toys - Pack a few of their fave books & toys and alternate between them during those long hours of travelling in the plane or on the road.
  • Doodle pad & Journal book- we find it to be extremely useful for the boys as they spend their whatever free time that they have drawing and writing about their travel experience.
  • Bolsters or other bedtime soft toys - Yes, we used to squeeze Ash's & Ayd's bolsters into our luggage as they do provide them a great sense of comfort especially in a foreign land. Luckily for us, this is no longer in practice.
  • Diapers & Wet Wipes - Pull-up diapers are our choice when it comes to travelling. Sometimes we are hard-pressed to find a decent diaper-changing room so erm, the park bench will suffice and that's when pull-ups are definitely more convenient.
  • Ziploc Bags - for soiled clothes, diapers or puke. And in case I vomit blood.
  • Shampoo & Bath foam
  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste
  • Laundry detergent - if you are planning to wash soiled clothes.
  • Baby Stroller - try to do a research on the country you would be holidaying in if the walkways are stroller-friendly. You wouldn't want to be lugging it up and down countless flights of steps. I've been there and done that, and it gave me such a good workout.
  • Baby Carrier - A further better workout would come in the form of this, and we are using the Ergo Baby Carrier. In fact, it has served us well all these years... ever since Ash was born!
  • Portable Booster Seat - We are using the Sack 'n' Seat, also since Ash's time and it is a godsend especially if we can't find a baby high chair during meal times.

4. DADDY'S GEAR

Also known as Daddy's geeky toys.
  • iPhone. iPod. iPad. iCan'tDoWithoutThem.
  • Laptop
  • Camera & lenses - don't forget the batteries!
  • ALL chargers for the gadgets above.

Uh-oh. I feel the travel bug biting again.

Hong Kong with buddies - Part II

2 comments :
(Daddy recounts)

Part II, also known as The one-that-kids-went-wild post

Erm, it has been a good 2 months since our holiday to Hong Kong and I'm still stuck at Part 2. Blame the huge amount of photos amassed during our 8-day trip and more importantly, procrastination.

(You can read PART 1 here.)

We alternated the adults' shopping time and the kiddos' playing time during our trip. And it helped that we shared our itinerary with them so that they knew exactly when it was their turn to have their share of fun.

Believe me, managing 5 kids and 1 infant wasn't exactly stuff that Disney fairy tales are made of - even for 6 adults. But as soon as they knew what was in store for them, they kept their behaviour in check. Well, most of the time anyway.

And the first treat of the trip was Ocean Park!

It has been 4 years since we last visited Ocean Park and now we return with 2 slightly older boys and 1 additional imp.

Throw another 3 kids into the mix, and one would have something potent enough to even send those cute pandas scurrying.

Well, not that they were ill-behaved. Yet.

But in any case, what struck me was the huge changes that Ocean Park had underwent during these few years. I believe the layout of the park has changed somewhat- and one thing that was certainly changed was the play area meant for kids. It is now known as Whisker's Harbour.

Back in 2007, it was as creative as one could get - Kids World. Heh.

But whatever name it goes by, the kids weren't in the mood to know. They only had ONE thing on their mind - FUN!

The kiddie rides certainly hadn't been revamped. There were the usual all-time faves like the choo-choo train and flying bugs.

Which never fail to elicit squeals of laughter from the kids.

But the one thing which ranked as their top-most fave ride there had got to be the Frog Hopper.

It was a ride which slowly goes up and then brings one down fast.

Of course, since it was a ride for kids, the thrill factor was tuned according to their threshold for excitement. And from the looks of it, it was exciting enough.

But kids are actually highly adaptable beings, sometimes even more so than us adults.

So after just one sitting, ALL 5 of them spent the next 15 minutes or so going up on this ride. Many many times.

I was amazed they could still derive so much fun from it after the number of times of going on it. They were that easily contented. Perhaps we adults would do well to learn from kids sometimes, no?

As for Ale, she was easily contented with her merry-go-round ride as well. In fact, she made her mummy go on it with her for more than 6 times!

The kids then decided to call a timeout and head for the 'Sea Lion Fun Time' show instead.

Which even got Clara up on stage to act like a sea lion!

But if we had thought that the kids had enough of the Frog Hopper rider, well... we were utterly wrong.

This time, they coerced us adults into 'hopping' along with them!

Funnily enough, the ladies seem to be more scared frightened horrified cautious than the young ones. Heh.

In the end, all 3 adults fell prey to their constant egging.

I would have gone on it too. But I was worried that the ride might experience too fast a descent.

Either that, or I was secretly afraid the safety bar couldn't be pinned down securely. No thanks to my belly of course.

Finally, the kids grew tired of that ride and went in search of forms of fun. Like this playground.

The good thing about Whisker's Harbour was that it had more than enough rides, activities, play areas (including a bouncy house) to keep the kids occupied.

We must have spent more than half of our time at Ocean Park there. But we parents didn't (and wouldn't) complain, since it allowed us to sit down and chill over some piping hot coffee and hot dogs.

And when we did eventually step out of Whisker's Harbour, it was already late afternoon. But everyone was still obviously still in high spirits!

So we took their spirits even higher, by going up onto the cable car ride.

The kids were undoubtedly very much excited about dangling high up in the air, since they were able to go up higher than the Frog Hopper ride. I had to remind them though, that the cable ride was unlike that froggy ride, primarily because the descending portion would be catastrophic, not to mention splattering if they were the same.

Still, they took in the spectacular panoramic views and enjoyed themselves on-board.

Even Ale thoroughly enjoyed the cable car ride.

Truth be told, there wasn't much for young kids to enjoy at the other side of Ocean Park once we disembarked.

Almost all of the rides at Adventure Land, Thrill Mountain & Marine World had the minimum height requirement of 1.22m and were clearly targeted at the older park-going crowd. Not to mention these rides were where the really long queues were. So at least we made the correct decision to let the kids spend as much time at Whisker's Harbour.

The notable attractions that were suitable for the 5 kids were mainly the aquariums, like the sea jelly exhibits.

Another one we would have loved to go was the Expedition Trail which showcased some of the rarest animals and plants in the world. Pity that it was turning dark and we had to make our way back to the main entrance.

And this time, instead of taking the cable car, we decided to take the Ocean Express. It was really a train ride, but made to look like a submerged watercraft so that we had the feeling like we were travelling under water.

I thought it was pretty neat, and more so since the queue was significantly shorter than the cable car ride!

And with the Christmas season fast approaching, it was not surprising to see every corner of the park being illuminated ever so enchantingly.

Definitely all very Christmas-y... with some very tired kids to show for at the end of a theme park day.

But we all had a great time of course!

Now for Disneyland - the ultimate source of fun that all the kids had been eyeing!
