Quintessential Queensland: The Ecolodge

No comments :
(Daddy recounts)

After 3 days of interacting with farm animals and relaxing by the beach, we figured we should take the chance to indulge the monkies in some nature of sorts. No, not the adventurous nature that the Gold Coast Theme Parks are famous for. Well, not yet anyway. Rather, it was time to get re-connected with Mother Nature and so up to the Glass House Mountains we headed up for a 2-night stay at an Ecolodge.

This was the Ecolodge that came highly recommended by Tourism Queensland, and also the one which we were supposed to stay for 3 nights. But the Ecolodge was fully booked the previous night, which was why we ended up at Rumba Beach Resort in Caloundra for one night.

Compared to the other 2 accommodations that we had put up in, Glass House Mountains Ecolodge is a quirky style of accommodation which prides itself in actively promoting environmental awareness to travellers.

It was only a short 20 minute drive from Caloundra, and soon we found ourselves in the lovely 2-Bedroom Mt Tibro Family Suite.

The first thing that both Ash & Ayd exclaimed?

What, NO Television???

Which is great by the way, although the 2 boys might beg to differ. In any case, our rooms were clean, neat and comfortable without being elaborate.

The second bedroom came with a loft, which made the absence of a TV quickly forgotten.

Indeed, both boys were fighting over who should take the single bed up in the loft. Ale, as you can see, had already laid claim to her choice of bedding though.

Once the boys came to an amicable solution, we stepped out of our suite to explore the Ecolodge's surroundings.

The one thing that struck me about the place was how beautifully serene and peaceful it was. And the expansive chill-out area right at our doorstep sure did play a part!

A quick stroll around the Ecolodge compounds had us entering the Garden of Eaten - an orchard with tropical fruit trees - where guests are free to pluck any ripe fruits for consumption.

But the most interesting bit of the Ecolodge has got to be this gem.

Keith Murray, who is the owner, had relocated two train carriages to the Ecolodge site.

And the interior of the carriages has been marvelously converted into a Dining area with tables and benches for guests to have their meals.

At the other end of the carriage, it comes complete with full kitchen facilities with every utensil you could ever possibly need on a self-catering holiday break.

There's even an outdoor BBQ burner as well. As for the other rail carriage, it has been converted into a Lounge and Library, where guests can play board games or enjoy a game of chess.

In essence, it is an extremely glorious place. It has always been Keith's baby and his love of the area has seen him fashion this little haven.

The time came for us to venture out to the surrounding National Parks as all of us decided that it would be a good idea to burn some fats by climbing a mountain.

We headed down to Mt Tibrogargan, which was about 400m away from the Ecolodge. There were a few options for us: a summit climb which would take us 3 hours, OR a relatively easy 3.3km trek round the mountain, OR a 340m ascent to the Mountain View Lookout.

With 3 monkies in tow, no prizes for guessing which option we chose then

It was a good thing we chose the Mountain View Lookout trek. No way would I be able to last 3.3km carrying Ale along for the trek!

Our faces may show otherwise, but we were actually quite breathless after our 340m climb.

We then drove - yes, drove - to the Glass House Mountains Scenic Lookout Point, where we could see the entire collection of Glass House Mountains.

The Glass House Mountains are actually a series of steep sided volcanic plugs which dominate the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

There are 16 peaks in total formed of lavas hardened inside vents of tertiary volcanoes which have been greatly eroded by weathering over 25 million years.

Breath-taking scenery, cool weather, beautiful sunset - what's there not to like? It even made perfect for goofing around in front of the cam!

Even the 2 oldest people in the village couldn't resist the goof as well.

The weather was a comfy 23 degrees, which made it all the more suitable for the monkies to prance around nary breaking a sweat.

All we were missing is a picnic basket. And if the boys had their way, speakers blaring 'Oppa Gangnam Style' as well.

As sunset approached, we headed back to the Ecolodge to prepare our dinner. And boy, did we have a big appetite after our exertions in the day.

After all, we did scale a mountain. All 340m of it.

Sell, Buy, Rent or Swap at SG Baby Mall

No comments :

Sponsored post
(Daddy blogs)

As a Father to 3 monkies, it is inevitable that toys and other baby-related stuff start cluttering up my house ever so slowly. When Ash was born, we had to buy almost everything brand new simply because my wife and I were not seasoned parents yet and didn’t exactly know what kind of baby stuff to really get. So more often than not, we would rather err on the side of caution and buy everything that we think might be beneficial to our precious firstborn.

Bad move.

Besides wasting money, our house mirrored that of a mini toy store where toys filled every nook and cranny. And don’t even get me started on my wardrobes which are bursting at the seams.

So what do I have to do? One way is to recoup some of my cash outlay by selling those baby items that my kids have long outgrown.

But sometimes, it gets a bit difficult to find a buyer for things which you want to sell. That is where online classified websites come in because these websites allow different buyers and sellers to communicate directly.

And SGBabyMall.com is one such online classified website which fulfils the purpose that I am looking for. SGBabyMall.com aims to give users a convenient and price competitive shopping experience for anything related to babies and mothers.

The process is simple enough – sign up for an account and start posting the item/s you intend to sell! Or if you are in a shopping mood, view the widest variety of baby stuffs and mother related items posted by all its members, and proceed to make an offer to buy should anything catch your fancy.

The fuss-free and no-frills layout of the website makes it a breeze to search through the items for sale, as well as to sort them according to either Price or Date Added.

But that is not all. You can also rent items which you wish to test out before buying or which you are only going to use for a short period of time.

Or better yet, exchange your unused items with other members who have items you need!

I spotted a Fisher Price Rainforest Jumperoo which is going for a rental rate of S$10 per week. Considering that a brand new one costs more than S$200, it might be more prudent to rent it on a short term basis.

SGBabyMall.com gives you a range of categories where you can buy, sell, rent or exchange products of your choice. There is even a header tab which showcases the more popular brands for quick and easy navigation!

WEEKLY THURSDAY SPECIAL
Every Thursday, a promotion will be activated between 8pm to 10pm. The first person who comment in the Facebook Comment plugin with 'I Love SG Baby Mall!' will get to buy the item at the special

Technology Twit

No comments :
(Daddy blogs)

Came across this comic strip in The Sunday Times 2 weekends back, and it struck a chord with me.

I laugh because I have been in that kind of situation before. And I frown (at myself) because sometimes I can’t help but take the easy way out.

It is sad to see families constantly let devices distract quality time from one another. We distance ourselves from healthy conversation at the table because we are blinded by news feed updates or kids are supplemented with a digital babysitter.

Are we forgetting the genuine foundation of relationships and parenting?

Because when we choose to focus on our device-at-hand, the status update we are sending to the someone at the table is:

You are not enough!

Not enough to hold my attention, my focus, my love, my eyes, or my being with you right now.

And I am so guilty of it at times.

But I am putting in effort to make a change. Because I believe every Dad should be conscious how he uses, accessorizes and values the importance of his smartphone. How does he match importance of the device in relation to his loved ones? For some of us, we value our mobile phone contract more than our marriage certificate. We use it as an escape from our fatherly role to lead our family, love our wife and teach our kids.

Technology is a blessing but it can hurt us too when it comes to our family. And when we are able to put it down at times when it matters most, the benefits reaped can be boundless. And that can never be put down in 140 words or less!

Quintessential Queensland: Self-driving

No comments :
(Daddy recounts)

For our recent trip to Gold Coast, there was only ever going to be one option for us when it comes to getting around Queensland. And that is to self-drive.

If you ask us, travelling with tour groups is totally out of the question. We prefer the freedom to plan our own travel itinerary. More importantly though, we want to be able to tweak our travel adventure according to the monkies' mood levels. I already see lots of parents nodding their heads in agreement.

A self-drive holiday is about freedom on wheels, as we get to explore places at our own pace. Also, we would not have to worry about figuring out how to get around using public transportation, especially since we now travel with 3 big suitcases (in addition to 3 cheekiemonkies!).

So for our 8-day trip in Queensland, Hertz had kindly provided us with our own set of wheels which came in the form of a Toyota Camry.

We had previously gotten a hatchback on our previous trips to Australia and it was just enough for our family of four then. Now with another addition to the family, that wouldn't do for us so it was great that our holiday car came with such a huge boot.

It was also great that we had pre-booked our car before departure. So once we arrived at Gold Coast Airport, we were good to go as the car collection process was a breeze!

And breeze was the word too as we coasted along the highways in the Gold Coast, enroute to Lillydale Farmstay which was our first stop of the trip.

The fantastic thing about self-driving in Australia is the ease of driving. The roads are relatively well-maintained and well-signed, with an added bonus of being extremely scenic as well!

Hertz had also provided us with their Hertz NeverLost® GPS Navigation System, which provides voice and visual prompts to guide us from our current location to the said destination.

During our previous Australia trip in 2009, I had relied on maps - those hard-copy, paper ones - to get to our destinations. Coincidentally, we were also on our way to Lillydale Farmstay when we got lost. Faced with the prospect of fast-disappearing daylight, I turned on the 3G on my phone and sought help from the maps app. We finally did make our way to Lillydale before night fell, but it came with a price - $350 worth of data roaming charges to be exact.

So I can't tell you how thankful I was for this little device. For one, it eliminated the stress of having to find my way in unfamiliar places. Also, with three monkies yakking away in the background throughout the journey, it can get a tad stressful if I had to keep my eyes perpetually peeled for the road signs (which whizz by ever so quickly).

And we did reach Lillydale Farmstay earlier this time around. In fact, we could afford a short rest before joining in for the 4.30pm animal feeding!

For the middle part of our trip, we headed up to the Glass House Mountains for a 2-night stay where we also grabbed the chance to explore the scenic driving route to Maleny, Montville and Mapleton.

I will share more about what we did there in my next 2 Queensland posts but suffice to say, the boys thoroughly enjoyed their time up in the mountains.

As for Ale, she definitely enjoyed snacking in the car!

Thanks Hertz, for taking the fuss out of our driving experience in Queensland! It would have been better if our car was a convertible though.

I'm only kidding.

For more details or to make a reservation, book online at www.hertz.com.sg or contact Hertz Reservation Centre at 1800 370 3388 (local toll-free) or email reserve@hertz.com.

Ku-jie's matrimonial bliss

No comments :
Today's Ku-jie's (or Daddy's sister) BIG day! And di-di, mei-mei and I are extremely excited!

In fact, we were so excited that we were up bright and early at 6am so that di-di & I can help open the car door of the bridal car. And in the process receive some angpows, but that is besides the point.

The point is all three of us monkies were all too eager to chip in and ensure that Ku-jie receives the most help possible from us.

Including fighting over who should hold the bridal gown train.

But in all seriousness, we did volunteer ourselves for being the advance party of Ku-jie's march-in ceremony.

And we did melt a few hearts in the process. Or so I think. Hee.

Congratulations Ku-jie & Uncle Russell! Wishing the both of you eternal bliss and happiness! And maybe a few more cousins for us to play with too.
