LEGOLAND Malaysia's LEGO X'mas Tree lights up!

Thanks to our annual passes, we have been frequent visitors to LEGOLAND Malaysia ever since our first visit back in early September. And the great news is, all 3 monkies show no signs of fatigue. Zilch. Which is pretty amazing considering I have lost count of the number of times they have been on the Project X or Dragon rollercoasters.

We had gone to LEGOLAND Malaysia with my in-laws, who particularly enjoyed the laser-busting hunt at the Land of Adventure's Lost Kingdom ride.

We had also terrorised the theme park with their buddies as well, which they will definitely follow up with another visit really soon. I am pretty certain about that. Heh.

But the best thing to come out of our repeated visits to LEGOLAND Malaysia? We managed to convert the monkies' Mummy - who has a disdain for all things rollercoaster-ish - into a super fan of the Project X coaster!

The boys are obviously so numbed from the free-fall that they could even make monkie faces at the camera on the way down.

And with Christmas right round the bend, what better way for LEGOLAND Malaysia to celebrate the joys of the festive season than to construct a towering Christmas Tree using DUPLO LEGO bricks!

Created from 427,695 LEGO DUPLO LEGO bricks, it is Asia's Tallest LEGO Christmas Tree at 9 metres.

Here's a time-lapse video of the tree being put together over 10 weeks.

Amazing, isn't it? Decorated with 260 LEGO ornaments and 108 special LEGO LED candles, the tree towers over 'The Beginning' area of the Park and will be on display from now until early January 2013.

LEGOLAND Malaysia held a tree lighting ceremony yesterday (29 Nov), and the family and I were invited down to soak in the festivities.

We were treated to caroling by youths from the Calvary Teenage Girl’s Home, Johor Bahru as well as special appearances by LEGOLAND's mascots.

The highlight of the ceremony was undoubtedly the illumination of the LEGO Christmas Tree and when the button was pressed, it was truly a sight to behold.

With the lighting up of the tree, it marked the start of Christmas celebrations at LEGOLAND
Malaysia! Visitors can look forward to the many planned activities including special walking
characters, storytelling sessions and Christmas ornament building activities.

The building sessions will be held at LEGO Academy daily from 11am-5pm and visitors can choose to either participate in a free building session or purchase specially packed bricks at the Brick Shop. With the purchase, visitors can learn how to build each item with LEGOLAND Malaysia model builders for several hours every day and take home the festive ornaments.

After the ceremony, we took the chance to wander about LEGOLAND Malaysia. It was our first time seeing the theme park after sunset, and it was extremely beautiful with all the lights. Not to mention much MORE cooling too!

The Miniland, in particular, was absolutely enchanting and I do strongly recommend that families stay on until sunset to see the entire theme park in another light.

The lighting of the park is one of the reason, but the other more enticing reason to stay on longer is that the queues at the rides were virtually non-existent! Both Ash & Ayd went on their fave Project X ride for 3 consecutive times. The wifey and I took turns to accompany them and trust me on this - the ride's thrill factor went up several notches when I am on it during the night time!

While when we were busy screaming our heads off, Ale was keeping herself entertained with the dummy vehicle outside.

At least she enjoyed it. I think.

LEGOLAND Malaysia will close at 8pm daily until the end of this year, so do make use of the chance to experience a different side of the Park when night falls!

Memories on Prints

The benefits of Canvas Printing are endless and the digital photography revolution means it has never been simpler to create a large format canvas from a digital photo. Not only is using Canvas Printing the best way to make the most of our best photographs, it is also an attractive technique that has helped to retain our photographs for a longer time.

I had previously blogged about the canvas prints from Anzo Creation where they had sponsored some prints. And the kind people there had offered to print one more - this time for my parents' home.

Needless to say, my parents loved it. :)

And if you are thinking of commissioning your own canvas prints, there is a canvas print to suit every budget.

The most affordable canvas is the PVC Canvas, with prices starting from S$30 for a 12" by 12" frame. Made in China, this canvas has a rough texture hence the uneven print finishing.

The SOLIT Canvas is made in Korea, and has a smooth, sharp and fine print finishing which is quite similar to that of photo paper finishing. Only drawback is that the material is rather thin. Prices start from S$45 for a 12" by 12" frame.

Made in Taiwan, the DIGITAL Canvas is a top-grade polyester-based canvas. It takes in ink well, giving it a very even print finishing. Prices start from S$55 for a 12" by 12" frame.

The Artist-UV Canvas is cotton-based and offers the best finishing of the lot. Made in Japan, the canvas print projects the effect of an oil painting. Our sponsored prints are of this material. Prices start from S$60 for a 12" by 12" frame.

Click HERE for more details on Anzo Creation's pricing.

With Christmas round the corner, canvas prints can make for very good presents too! Attractive and durable, canvas printing is an ideal way to preserve those special memories. And right now, here's a special promotion exclusively for our blog's readers:

Quote 'CHEEKIEMONKIES' to get 10% off the published prices!

Life in the fast lane

No comments :
(Daddy rambles)

Christmas is coming.

And so we come to the end of another year. We will then embark on a new year that will most certainly go faster than the last.

This is the thing that sucks being a parent - life zooms by too quickly to take it all in. How often have you heard someone say that before you know it the kids will be off to university.

It is so true.

I mean, I have been a Daddy for close to eight years now. I've spoon-fed enough meals, changed my fair share of diapers and lulled them to sleep in my arms numerous times. Turns out that this is the easy stuff.

No one ever prepared me for the whole emo-thing involved in this parenting business. One second I can be as happy as a lark that my boy came out tops in some sports event, the next I'll be crying - stealthily - my eyes out during his K2 Graduation Day.

Don't get me wrong. I am enjoying every single second of it, but those seconds, minutes and hours are flying by, way too fast for my liking. The monkies are getting bigger, older and learning new things every single day. I want to take mental notes about it all but there is only so much that my brain can store.

Sometimes, it does get really hard seeing them get so big. It makes me almost want to stunt their growth and keep them right where they are now.  Why does everything have to get old? It really sucks.

Soon there will be no more wrestling matches on the mattress. No more driving them around while blaring one of their favourite songs in the car. They are changing, bit by bit. As much as I don't like to see it happen, it is just how life works and I have got to accept it somehow. I am just not prepared for that. I don't know if I ever will be.

But what I do know is that if I continue to dwell on the future, I am going to miss out on everything that is happening right now. These moments are the true treasure that we have been gifted as our children are growing up, there is a need to cherish each moment with them now for as long as the opportunities are still there.

And that I know.

Playmobil PLAYcation at Sentosa

(Daddy blogs)

Playmobil, for me, has always been a beautiful and enticing marriage of modern technology with the craft traditions of German toymakers. What other line of toys has figurines looking as if they are having a good time, all the time? Moulded in colourful plastic they may be, but the little knights, pirates, ancient Romans and fairies all display a fun level of quirkiness that I had long grown accustomed to.

So what could possibly make for reliving a memorable childhood than having an afternoon (or evening) spent with these life-sized Playmobil figurines, or 'klickys' as they are known in their early days.

For this year-end School Holidays, Palawan Beach on Sentosa has been transformed into a Playmobil haven for kids and adults alike. There are four different themed areas - Fire Rescue & Police Chase, Magic Castle, The Knight’s Fort, Pirate’s Treasure Cove - to check out in total.

How about aiding the Playmobil Police in nabbing the bad guys at the fire Rescue & Police Chase area?

Ale, on the other hand, preferred the whimsical world of enchanted fairies in the Magic Castle area.

But the one area which took up the bulk of the 3 monkies' time was the Knight's Fort. And quite simply, it was because of this.

Hidden behind the facade of the Fort lies a climbing structure for kids to challenge. And it even comes complete with a slide!

I had to practically tear the 3 of them away from the structure so that we can explore the rest of the Playmobil set-up. And luckily, there were ample activities to keep them entertained.

Take part in the Playmobil Challenge (Every Wed - Sun, 5.30pm) where kids will be able to hunt for Pirates' treasure and bag home prizes in the process. Or choose to remain frozen for the longest time to snag a prize as well.

Personally, I love any game that brings peace and tranquillity to my surroundings.

So while the 2 boys stay chilled, Ale decided to do some exploring on her own. With some help from a kind Mr. Policeman.

Can't get enough of Playmobil toys? Then head to the Playmobil Play Pit (Daily, 2.30 - 8pm) where kids will be able to indulge in some creative free playwith the Playmobil toy sets.

Boys will go gung-ho over the Pirates and Knights play sets, while girls will swoon over the fairytale princess set-up.

In fact, there are a ton of other Playmobil-related activities to keep everyone happy!

Little Hands & Minds (Art Workshop)
2.30pm - 8pm, Daily
Chargeable at $10 per pack

Boogie with Captain Palawan
4pm, Every Wed - Sun

Meet & Greet Playmobil Mascot
5.30pm, 6.30pm & 7.30pm, Every Thu - Sun

Storytelling Comes Alive!
24 Nov – 2 Dec 2012
4.30pm & 7pm , Every Wed - Sun

Rhythm & Senses (Interactive Show)
3 Dec – 16 Dec 2012
4.30pm & 7pm, Every Wed - Sun

The Puppet Master Musical
17 Dec – 30 Dec 2012
4.30pm& 7pm, Every Wed - Sun

Check out the handy programme listing below for a summary of all the activities happening on Palawan Beach.

In a world where toys all too often suffer the dreariness of didacticism, Playmobil has kept faith with imagination and hopefully, this will allow it to find new fans in today's technology-driven times.

Sentosa PLAYcation - PLAYful Moments
Date: 24 Nov - 30 Dec
Venue: Palawan Beach (Ship hull beside Beach Station)
All activities free, unless otherwise stated.

A is for App

No comments :
Sponsored Post
(Daddy reviews)

Like it or not, the proliferation of technology is here to stay and I would even say that it will form an increasing importance in our children's lives. I have seen kids from as young as 12 months old become seasoned swipers; not only swiping the smartphone or tablet but also swiping the device away from their parents.

As with almost all things, moderation and education is the key. So it is equally important that we choose the appropriate apps for them to play. I had previously shared what Ale's top 5 iPhone/iPad apps were and you can read it HERE.

So when Electronic Arts (EA) approached me to do a review of some of their educational apps, I saw no reason to turn them down. Especially since I knew I would have two zealous reviewers-in-waiting.

EA, who is one of the largest game developers in the world, boasts some of the world's most popular mobile titles such as The Sims, Monopoly, Scrabble, Bejeweled and many others.

And the first game that got their fingers busy was Pictureka (US$0.99), a game where the keenest eye wins. Players would essentially be instructed to find certain objects like '5 pairs of legs' or '3 fruits' which are hidden within pictures crammed with crazy cartoons. Even the wifey and I couldn't resist in trying to out-spot the hidden objects before the boys!

If devising a line of strategy whilst improving eye-hand coordination is what the kids need, you may want to check out Flight Control Rocket (which is FREE!).

A spin-off from the original Flight Control game, this one has players attempting to steer different coloured fleet to their respective docking stations aboard a mothership - by drawing a flight path. Sounds easy enough, but things start to get complicated when all too many ships start crowding the entire screen!

But the one game that had the two boys deeply engrossed was the Mystery Mania (US$0.99) game.

The premise of the game sounds intriguing enough: You're a mad scientist's charming robot creation, outsmarting man-eating plants and building ingenious contraptions as you explore bizarre rooms full of unsolved riddles. Guzzle strange potions, diffuse laser beams and battle angry creatures on your quest to discover why you were created. Who is the mysterious boy you keep running into? Can you escape the mansion in one piece? Solve the mysteries of the mansion!

Mystery Mania is a puzzle game at heart, and is a point-and-click adventure where you must direct the robot to interact with objects and environments in 27 different rooms. In every room you'll need to solve a puzzle before you can go any further. Move this box, use the magnet, distract that dog with meat – it's the type of trial and error, item-combining puzzles that had both Ash and Ayd hooked from the very first room.

At the time of review, they are about halfway through the mansion. I have half the mind to aid them in deciphering all the puzzles in one sitting but they wouldn't hear of it. So I obliged, albeit begrudgingly.

This is an outrageously clever game that is loaded with great personality. It has a tight story with some brilliantly fun puzzles that can't help but make you smile. When you figure the puzzles out eventually, that is. Overall, great game for kids as they will no doubt be kept entertained while giving those brains a good workout at the same time.

Thanks once again, to Electronic Arts! For a whole lot more of mobile games, check out the entire catalogue at http://www.eamobile.com.

The School Holidays have well and truly begun. And given the fickleness of the weather we have been having of late, I thought a compilation of Indoor Activities for Kids will be rather appropriate.

It's Christmas season, and once again the malls will be invaded cartoon characters adored by all kids. And best of all, everything is INDOORS!

7. Get a taste of life during the Japanese Occupation at the Old Ford Factory Museum, or pay your respects to the gallant dead at the Reflections at Bukit Chandu

The Old Ford Factory Museum played a vital role in Singapore's history, as it served as the venue for the formal surrender of Malaya by the British Forces to the Japanese Army on 15 February 1942. This museum tells the many tales of those who lived through the Japanese Occupation years. We were there 2 years back (http://cheekiemonkie.blogspot.com/2010/05/i-heart-museums-old-ford-factory.html) for a Kids event, and I was particularly amazed by the interesting Japanese Occupation-related exhibits there. Definitely worth a second trip there.

Address: 31-K Pepys Road, Singapore 118458
Opening Hours: Tuesdays - Sundays, 9.00 am - 5.30 pm

8. You don't have to fly to enjoy Changi Airport

We simply love going down to the Changi Airport simply because we love the open spaces there, especially in Terminal 3. From the Aviation Gallery, Interactive Art Booths, Kids Playground to Singapore's tallest indoor slide (12m high! Gulp!), we never get bored during our time at Changi Airport. Oh, and there's still the skytrain for us to take too!

And now with the inclusion of the Angry Birds Space Lounge which features a space-themed indoor playground with fun obstacles, slides and a gigantic ball pit, there is no way my monkies will pass up a chance to head down to the Airport.
