Melaka Adventure with the Peugeot 508 RXH

In case you didn't already know, we are a family that loves to go on road trips. Nothing quite like a road trip northwards to spend time together as a family and explore Malaysia. There are are just so many great things to see and do... plus it definitely is much easier on the wallet for a family of five!

So when Peugeot Singapore offered us the chance to head up to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Melaka during the March School Holidays in the comfort of the newly-launched Peugeot 508 RXH 2.0 Hybrid 4, it was a proposition that we could not refuse.

The Peugeot 508 RXH 2.0 Hybrid 4 is a technological marvel, boasting a diesel-electric hybrid engine. What's that, you ask? It essentially means it has a 163bhp, four-cylinder diesel engine driving the front wheels and a 36bhp electric motor powering the back. This wizardry means you can, allegedly, get almost 25 kilometres on 1 litre of fuel - an amazingly high figure for such a large and luxurious 4WD!

Exterior- wise, I loved the styling of the car! Okay, so the colour of the car played had major influence in my liking of the car but I especially adored the three vertical bars in each of the lower-side air intake. These bars contain white LEDS which act as daytime running lights, and are supposed to bring to mind a lion's claws. Yes, the Peugeot logo is a lion after all.

And one thing is for sure; the French really know how to enhance one's driving experience. The gorgeous styling of the 508 RXH 2.0 Hybrid 4 continues inside with futuristic dashboard detailing and a premium finishing.

There are four driving modes, selected by a rotary knob on the centre console. These are ZEV (electric-only), Auto, Sport (with a livelier engine responses), and 4x4, which keeps the rear wheels powered all the time. For maximum efficiency of its hybrid system, Auto is the default choice and through my driving experience, it works well enough for a leisurely drive along the North-South Highway in Malaysia.

And equally important when on a road trip to Malaysia is the 7” colour display screen which doubles up as GPS navigation system - which came in extremely useful when we went on our great food hunt in Melaka. But more on that in my second post.

For the monkies though, something else about the car took their breath away.

Yes, what else but the ultra cool Panaromic Glass Roof that the Peugeot 508 RXH sports? With a turn of a knob, they were thoroughly impressed by the enormous glass sunroof that sucked in the beautiful blue sky along our drive up to Melaka.

Of course, the most gorgeous car in the world would count for nothing if our luggage for a family of five are not able to fit into its boot. But we need not have worried, the boot space was exceedingly generous!

And with our luggage dumped into the boot, we were off!

The passenger seats were far roomier than most of the car models that I have driven. Ale's car seat is rather wide and takes up a fair amount of space in my current car so the first thing the boys remarked when I transferred her car seat to the Peugeot, was that they have suddenly so much more room to move around! Although I highly suspect that the car's Quad-zone Digital Air Conditioning which allows the 3 rear passengers to customise their personal air-coditioning zone played a part too.

Our drive to Melaka was uneventful, to put it simply. And this can only be a good thing when it comes to road trips. Although the 508 RXH is a big car and it sure felt like it while drving, but accurate steering made it easy to place. It gripped well and stayed level, ensuring a smooth drive for all of us. In fact, the ride was so smooth that I could have easily read a book were not for the need to keep an eye on the road ahead. Not that I would, but I could.

Uneventful or not, I - after the monkies' incessant ramblings of 'Are we there yet?' - was still pretty happy to finally reach our destination, which Peugeot Singapore had kindly put us up at Hatten Hotel Melaka.

Our previous visits to Melaka had us staying near Jonker Street, so Hatten Hotel Meleka was something different. For one, it is surrounded by huge shopping malls (Mahkota Parade and Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall) which made food and entertainment super accessible.

We had two adjoining Junior Suites, and can you tell that the monkies loved the rooms?

Since we were there over the weekend, there was no chance we would forgo a stroll along Jonker Street - short drive from our hotel - to take in all its sights and sounds... and chendol, pineapple tarts, char kway teow, you know the drill.

And when it got too crowded or hot for our liking, all we had to do take shelter back at the shopping malls beside our hotel. And whatever kiddie rides that the monkies fancy, that is.

Pardon Ale's, erm chor-lor pose. Anyway, the one thing that the monkies truly fancied though, was this.

The hotel pool, complete with a kids pool area and splashing water fountains!

Yup, all holidays should be made of these.

And snuggling in bed too. Because shopping and feasting is tiring stuff.

That pretty much summed up our first day in Melaka. But there is much more to come in Day 2, of course... as we take our trusty Peugeot on a mini food hunting trip around Melaka. PLUS, we have a very very special surprise in store for our readers, so do stay tuned for Part 2 of our Melaka Adventure!

A Weekend of Family Fun with Volkswagen

The school holidays may be over - yes *groan* I know - but having fun when the weekends roll along need not be. And if you thinking of bringing your children to somewhere lively (and air-conditioned, no less) with free snacks, free games and free prizes to win, then the Volkswagen Centre at Alexandra is the place to be this weekend.

Volkswagen Family Weekend is back on 29 and 30 March (Sat & Sun) 2014 and everyone is invited! There will be free flow of corn cups and hot dog buns to keep those bellies happy, while kids can test out their driving skills at the Tricycle Park, or just simply flash monkie faces at the Instant Photo booth.

But those will not be the most interesting bits - Children visiting the Volkswagen Centre at Alexandra will be tasked to participate in a Treasure Hunt and look for 5 Teddy Bears that will be hidden in 5 Volkswagen cars around the showroom.

And since I am feeling generous, I will give you 2 hints where these Teddy Bears may be hiding. One of them can be found squirreled inside the brand new Touran Comfort 1.6 TDI.

The Cat A 7-seater MPV now comes with a 1.6L TDI Clean Diesel Engine, which combines solid driving power with low fuel consumption and emission levels. In fact, I have been told that it can travel up to 1,300km on a single tank! Coupled with a longer service and maintenance intervals, all these simply translate to more savings for your pocket.

But one aspect that will sure to translate to more fun for my monkies will be the panaromic sun roof that the Touran Comfort 1.6 TDI is equipped with!

I took the Touran TDI for a spin and was pleasantly surprised at its excellent ride quality and superb refinement. The ride is supple and composed at almost all speeds, while the turbocharged engine performs its task of excellent acceleration.

Equally a worthy ride, I had a great time test-driving the Passat 1.8 TSI (*hint*hint*) as well.

The Passat has all the features that one would come to expect from a German-engineered sedan, such as a powerful TSI engine, 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), Keyless Entry and Start-stop System, Hands-Free Park Assist, Fatigue Detection, Reverse Camera and the one thing that most families would want - a large boot space.

Simply put, the Passat is quiet, refined, economical and a perfect companion for eating up a few hundred of kilometres in a week.

But as a parent of young children, safety when it comes to ferrying them around in a car inevitably ranks high on my list. So the key similarities which I find very important for the Touran and Passat are that they have 6 airbags installed and obtained the Euro NCAP 5-star safety rating.

Now that you too have your 2 hints safely in the bag, all your child needs to do is to hunt down the remaining 3 hidden bears. Just remember to first collect the Teddy Bear Treasure Hunt Card at the counter when you arrive before going on your teddy bear hunt. Each teddy bear will carry an interesting fact about each of the cars, so use that to answer the 5 questions on the card. Once completed, submit it to the counter and redeem a surprise gift.

That's it - No purchase required, and definitely no other strings attached.

As for the surprise gift, I can reveal that it will either be a LEGO toy or a Volkswagen premium, depending on availability. My guess is the LEGO toys will be the ones running out first, no?

But that's not all. All completed cards will be eligible for a grand lucky draw, where one lucky winner will walk away with these prizes worth $500 in total!

Want more, you say? Well, just for our readers, you can place your name on our cheekiemonkie guest list, show up at the showroom and claim your free gift! The first 5 persons to quote 'I'm on the cheekiemonkie guest list' to the counter staff will be rewarded with a Volkswagen portable speaker!

iPhone not included ah, in case you are wondering.

The subsequent 40 readers who show up and quote the same phrase will walk away a Volkswagen Tumbler. You get your free gift just by showing up! Simple as that.

With so much fun stuff and free gifts to look forward to at Volkswagen Family Weekend, who says there is bear-ly anything to do this weekend?

Westgate Wonderland Outdoor Playground

7 comments :
(Daddy splashes)

The time is now for the western part of Singapore to get all happening and fun. Besides being home to three ultra enjoyable Public Swimming Complexes (Jurong West Aquatic Centre, Jurong East Swimming ComplexChoa Chu Kang Swimming Complex) and a deluge of new shopping malls, it now has the largest thematic outdoor playground in a shopping mall. And it is all FREE!

Yes, that playground is Westgate Wonderland located on Level 4 of the newly-opened Westgate Shopping Mall in Jurong East. We were there a few weekends back but the queue to enter was so long that it stretched all the way into the air-conditioned shopping areas! No way was I ever going to join the insane queue, but the monkies did make me promise to bring them back again.

And so I did.

We went back one day before the March School Holidays commenced and the crowd was visibly lesser.

The playground adopts a Fantasy Garden Theme, and is split primarily into three zones - one dry play area each for those aged below 5 years and for older children, and a wet play area for everyone.

The monkies first checked out the play area meant for kids aged 5 years and below, which stocked a fair amount of interactive play structures.

See the bell-like blue flowers in the right of the photo above? Those were my fave part of the play area, and the monkies too I highly suspect. These blue bells respond to touch with musical sounds and lights, and the monkies had a field day trying to orchestrate some erm, melodious music.

No slides or climbing structures can be found here but rather, the bright and cheery forms of bugs are present to encourage the kids to climb, jump and even pose on them.

Other interactive elements include spinning seats in the shape of oranges, large flowers with spinning canopies that create a kaleidoscope of light patterns on the ground, as well as standalone play stations.

As fun and interactive as the structures at the younger children's play area may be, they were never going to be enough for Ash and Ayd... and Ale too, who seems bent on following her 2 older brothers everywhere. So it was off to the play area meant for children aged between 5 and 12, where the action inevitably turned up quite a few notches!

The boys first tackled the climbing wall structure, before proceeding to the centerpiece of the Westgate Wonderland - the 10-metre tall tree house!

Obviously the ultimate goal is to ascend to the top of the tree house, and my monkies needed no invitation to do just that.

I didn't follow them as they climbed and squeezed through the various netting structures on the way to the summit - because y'know, it can get really embarrassing if I get stuck somewhere in the middle - so I told the boys to keep a watchful eye on their sister along the way.

And although the tree house is meant for children aged 5 years and above, Ale completed the ascension quite effortlessly and emerged back on the ground via a meandering slide!

The tree house is connected to a giant play structure, so children can climb, slide, run or hang to their hearts' content.

The thing about the tree house is that parents can lose sight of their kids while they are in the process of climbing to the top as the upper portion is covered. So if you wish to keep your eyes on your kids instead, there is the option of a smaller climbing area beside the tree house - in the form of a giant flower pot.

Here, everything and everyone will be visible at all times, with an equally meandering slide awaiting the children when they reached the top.

Or if you get tired by just seeing all the kids climb and run amok, parents can grab a seat on the cute mushrooms, logs or fruit chairs while keeping an eye on them.

As you probably realise, the monkies visited the playground in their swimming attire. And it was all because of this.

At the heart of the water play area, a large watering can with an active spray nozzle towers over the children, making all them drenched and deliriously happy. Mini water fountains are also planted all around, increasing the splashing fun factor. Just ask Ale.

Half of the water play area comes under a roof, with the other half not sheltered from the sun. So yes, do come prepared with sunblock too as it can get really hot at times!

The tree house may endear to the boys most - they climbed it countless times - but for Ale, I think the water play area was a clear winner.

A nice touch at this playground is the presence of a Blow Dry Room (it's FREE to use!) and Changing Room located just besde the wet area.

So no excuse for parents for not letting their children frolic amid the water fountains then! Heh.

Brimming with bright colours and with a chock-ful of play structures to keep the kids physically stimulated, the Westgate Wonderland has got to be the best among all the shopping mall playgrounds in Singapore as of now. A must-visit as my monkies will attest to.

P.S. I heard that when night falls, the playground comes alive with special lighting and sound effects!
