Ashputtel: The Story of Cinderella

Media Invite
(Daddy reviews)

You know how some things never change... like how Ash produced a vehement 'NOooo!' when he realised we were off to catch Ashputtel: The Story of Cinderella over the long weekend. Like almost all boys, he had long associated that fabled character with girls and deemed it to be un-boy to be caught watching it.

I said almost all boys because luckily, Ayd was rather enthusiastic upon learning about our little outing.

Either way, it had been quite a long while since we had last caught a kids production. So thanks to I Theatre, we got the chance to learn more about this girl called Ashputtel.

Ashputtel. A name that definitely sounded foreign to me when I first heard it. I soon learnt that Ashputtel was one of the many stories compiled by the Grimm Brothers. It is a traditional Kindermärchen or Hausmärchen - Children's tale or household tale. Subsequently, Charles Perrault took Asputtel as his inspiration for Cinderella, a classic fairy tale that has enchanted all young girls (and some adults too) all around the world.

So the all-familiar ingredients of the story are still the same - the poor girl who has lost her mother since young, an evil stepmother, two wicked stepsisters, a Prince Charming, and a magical influence.

But there are differences between the two stories as well and with lovely songs, dance and comedy woven into the musical, I have to say even the wifey and I enjoyed it!

And the boys?

Ayd definitely loved the musical, especially the parts when the the two stepsisters were trying on Ashputtel's shoe. As for Ash, he begrudgingly mumbled about something that he enjoyed it as well. I caught him laughing out loud at many intervals during the show so it must have been all good! Heh.
