Hooked onto Printing

Product Review
(Daddy prints)

One of the perks of being a blogger for any length of time is getting nifty stuffs to review. What's even better is when it’s something that you genuinely end up liking. Such is the case with the HP OfficeJet 6700 Premium I was given and tasked to review.

Let me just get the technical and perfomance aspects of the printer out the way - the HP Officejet 6700 Premium boasts fast printing speeds, all-in-one capabilities (print/scan/copy/fax), and a stylish compact design; making it a great choice for anyone working in a small office or home office.

This printer features a 250 sheet tray that allows for paper up to 8.5×14-inches, multiple scan-to options, fax options, wired and wireless connectivity, double-sided printing and a 2.65-inch touch screen.

Setup is pretty standard fare except for the optional steps to get the printer an ePrint address and set it up to use HP's Web-based Print Apps. I'll get to those last 2 features in a bit. Both added steps are easy, however, and they don't take much time. Linking my laptop wirelessly to the printer too, proved to be a painless affair.

While I do dig the ease of convenience offered by the printer's wireless printing capability, what really got to me was the HP ePrint feature. Each HP web-connected printer has a unique email address, giving one the freedom to print from virtually anywhere in the world!

What this means is that I can now print while I am outside as well. There isn't any need to worry about special software or driver updates. HP ePrint is designed to work on almost every mobile device and platform. All it takes is one email. So whenever I need to print something for my monkies, I merely send it to my HP ePrint enabled printer’s email address, and they collect the pages from the tray.…without me even being at home!

Yes, they did look dumbfounded when they saw the documents making its way out without me having to connect to the HP Officejet 6700 Premium. Heh.

Printing-wise, I have to say it is a strong performer. Not only did it print my business documents and photographs well, it did so at respectable speeds too. Admittedly, having used printers from 2 other competitor brands before, I would say all the printers actually offer little difference in terms of print quality - at least for day-to-day usage at home.

But what set HP web-connected printers apart from the rest is one most awesome-ness feature. One that had both Ash and Ayd hogging my printer every single night.

Introducing Print Apps by HP - they are essentially special print applications available exclusively for use on HP Web-enabled printers. A print app is a shortcut to printing content from the Web directly from your printer, with no computer required.

Print apps give you direct access to great pre-formatted content from HP and leading companies from around the world, like Dreamworks, Crayola and Rovio (of Angry Birds fame). You can choose from a growing library of print apps that make printing faster, simpler and more useful than ever.

Oh, and did I mention that all the apps are FREE OF CHARGE? As long as you purchase a HP web-connected printer, you gain instant access to all these wondrous Print Apps!

The process is simple: register your printer at ePrintCenter and log in whenever you want to add a new app to your printer. Once you select the app, it will become a feature of your printer. That means no more wasted minutes turning on your computer and browsing online when you need to print something, fast. Simply use the screen on your printer to select the app that fits your needs, whether you want to print the daily news, an activity for kids, or more.

From brain-stimulating puzzles to printable coloring pages, greeting cards and games from Dreamworks, Pocoyo, Playmobil and other creative activities, the HP library offers downloadable content that’s sure to enhance kids' learning experience.

And the Print Apps are not only restricted to 2D activities. You even print out modeling kits to create your own 3D crafts, which the boys have been going ga-ga over.

But the app that they are most enamoured with currently has got to be the Awesome Airplanes one, where they get to print 14 different templates of paper aeroplanes!

Any wonder why my workstation is now littered with all of their paper airplanes???

But it's not all play and no work too. Beside all the fun apps, there are educational apps that strive to make learning more interesting for kids as well. And in an attempt to bring some localized flavour to the Print Apps ecosystem, HP has partnered two leading educational providers in Singapore which allows parents direct access to assessment and test content... all from the printers.

But in keeping with the spirit of the school holidays season - which basically means schoolwork ranks bottom for now - I will save the details of the educational apps in another blog post. I will also share some of the Print Apps that I have discovered to be relevant to me and the wifey.

For now though, the monkies have been the primary clientele of the HP OfficeJet 6700 Premium. They have been clamouring to explore all the kids-friendly apps and printing activity sheet after activity sheet whenever we get back home in the evenings. All without having to be access to my laptop! And to think I don't even have to crack my brain to think up of various craft activities to keep them busy.

In fact, they would rather print, as they call it, "fun stuff" from the printer than ask to play the iGadgets. And obviously, I am happy to just let them be. Even though it means I have to stock up on more ink cartridges!
