Free Activities Galore for Families during NS50 Week (1-10 Aug)!


National Day takes on an even greater significance this year, as 2017 marks 50 years of National Service or NS50. For 50 years, NS has fulfilled a critical need for defence and security and provided the peace and stability on which we have built Singapore.

The theme for NS50 is “From My Generation to Yours”, which reflects the strength of the NS institution as a shared legacy across generations, as well as a commitment and duty passed down from one NSman to the next.


And since this is a significant milestone in Singapore’s nation building journey, there will be plenty of family-friendly activities held in the lead up to Singapore's 52nd birthday on 9 August! NS50 Week will be held between 1 and 10 August 2017, so here's your complete guide to what to expect:

29 July to 8 August 2017

RED-X Games - The Family Challenge 2017

Held at the Padang from 29 July to 8 August (9am to 7pm), the RED-X Games - The Family Challenge 2017 will feature an obstacle course with a 'Own Time Own Target' mode which allows everyone try and complete the obstacle course at their pace. The individual stations are specially created to mimic the training that every soldier undergoes. Participants can expect popular obstacles like Low Wall, Multi-Rig, Monkey Bar, Rope Climb, Farmer's Walk and Tyre Flip.

The ‘Discovery” Challenge allows everyone to complete the obstacle course at their pace while those who are up for a challenge can participate in an ‘Ultimate’ Challenge, which is opened to families and individuals, where participants are to complete all the obstacles in the shortest possible time, to win a RED-X dry bag.

*Interested public may register at the RED-X Booth at the GASG Sports Festival at the Padang. Registration is free for the ‘Discovery’ Challenge and $20 for the ‘Ultimate’ Challenge.

5 & 6 August 2017

‘Get Active and Celebrate NS50’ Sports Festival
*Admission is FREE and no registration is required.

Held at Toa Payoh Hub Atrium on 5 to 6 August, 9am to 9pm, visitors to the carnival can look forward to activities:

- NS-inspired obstacle course
This obstacle course is inspired by training in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Home Team, and promises a fun-filled challenge for kids and parents! The six obstacles include Low Wall; Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) Ladder; Swing Bar; Tyre Flip/Hop; Dodge the Crowd; and Flying Fox.

Each participant will be given a Singapore flag during registration, which they will have to carry as they make their way through the obstacle course. At the end of the obstacle course, participants will insert the flag to create an ‘NS50 Pledge’ art installation wall. The NS50 logo will be visible when the wall is completely filled with flags.

- Fitness workouts and active health stations
After completing the obstacle course, participants can head over to nearby activity booths where they can take part in sports try-outs and static workouts. Examples include an Active F.I.T challenge, a Watt Bike challenge and a martial arts workout. Those who have completed the ActiveSG Steps Challenge can also redeem a limited edition NS50 Jerrycan water bottle at the redemption booth (while stocks last).

- Live Music Performances
Camokakis, Edric Hsu, and Shabir will be performing songs from the NS50 Music Album at the Sports Festival.

- Festival stage activities
Fitness-related workouts and performances will take place on the festival stage throughout the day.

FREE Gym and Swimming Pool Entry for National Servicemen, and Family and Friends

Entry to all ActiveSG gyms and swimming pools will be free on 5 and 6 August 2017! Past and present national servicemen will just have to present their 11B, or SAFRA/HomeTeamNS membership cards to the counter staff on duty before entering the facility. Family members and friends also enter FOR FREE!

SAFTI-Pasir Laba Coach Tour


In celebration of 50 years of National Service, S’pore Discovery Centre will be having a coach tour with commentary by our guides to both SAFTI Military Institute and Pasir Laba Camp.

Given their significance and rich history to generations of NSmen, this rare opportunity allows NSmen to reminisce and share their memorable NS journey with their family members. Abound with unique memories and stories of our National Service journey, visitors will get a rare glimpse of the SAF officers training grounds, iconic SAFTI tower, SAF Parade Square, infamous Peng Kang hill, the state-of-the-art Multi-Mission Range Complex (MMRC), the iconic Leaders Square and much more.

The SAFTI-Pasir Laba coach tour starts at the SAFTI Bus Bay, and is estimated to take an hour. On 5 August, in conjunction with the ‘Celebrating NS50’ Picnic, it will run at 1.05pm, 2.05pm, 3.05pm, 4.05pm, and 5.05pm. On 6 August, the coach tour will run at 10.05am, 12.05pm, 2.05pm, and 4.05pm.

Families for Life ‘Celebrating NS50’ Picnic


Head at the Singapore Discovery Centre between 3pm and 9.30pm, expect plenty of family-friendly activities like games, bouncy castles, face painting and an outdoor movie under the stars!

And in celebration of 50 years of National Service, families can also look forward to fun NS50-themed activities and games... including the first-ever SAFTI-Pasir Laba coach tour, families can test their skills at the mini Standard Obstacle Course (SOC) and Individual Marksmanship Trainer (IMT) shooting. Families will also be able to DIY their own ID tag and rank insignia!

7 to 13 August 2017

NS Obstacle Challenge @ Eastpoint Mall

Eastpoint Mall will be holding a mini ‘NS Obstacle Challenge’ from 7 to 13 Aug to commemorate NS50 and celebrate National Day. Children aged 6 to 12 years old will be able to experience military training through a realistic obstacle course, and will receive a certificate that certifies them fit to protect the nation.
