16 Activities for Kids this Vesak Day Weekend 2016


It's the Vesak Day long weekend! Oh wait, only the school-going kiddos get an extra day off on Monday. Lucky buggers. But that alone is no reason stay cooped up at home this weekend... especially since the mid-year examinations are over. Woot!

Plenty of 'Open House' events will be happening this weekend - Pulau Ubin, RSAF Open House, and Tanjong Pagar Railway Station. Then there is a Japanese festival, Car Garage Sale, new kid-centric exhibition and your absolute last chance to catch the blooming tulips at Gardens by the Bay. Phew, it's gonna be a power-packed weekend!

21 May: Coastal Cleanup with Sea Shepherd at Jelutong Beach

Find out more about aquaculture in Singapore and the heritage of fish farming in Singapore in this special 'Open House' opportunity every day of Pesta Ubin! Don't miss this unique opportunity to get a glimpse of the community that live and work in the waters off Pulau Ubin.

Suitable for kids aged 8 and above, accompanied by adults. Safety equipment and procedures will be provided and explained. Minimum 4 persons per trip, maximum 10 persons per trip. Super Japan Matsuri

The matsuri is a Japanese communal festival that is typically held during summer, in celebration of an event. Encompassing a wide variety of performances, games, and Japanese street snacks, it symbolises the community's unity as a whole and its harmony with the gods. With more than seven food and games stalls, Super Japan Matsuri by WAttention recreates this uniquely Japanese experience that the whole family can enjoy. Satiate your hunger with a range of popular snacks such as the takoyaki (grilled octopus ball), okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake), and kushimono (skewered food); or have fun playing yo-yo tsuri (yo-yo balloon fishing) and senbonbiki (lucky string game).

Tanjong Pagar Railway Station Open House

Other than exploring the railway station, visitors can also look forward to an exhibition titled WOMEN: New Portraits by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz. The photo portraits feature women of outstanding achievement including artists, musicians, CEOs, politicians, writers and philanthropists. The exhibition will be open to the public from 29 April to 22 May 2016 at the Main Hall, as part of a 10-city global tour.

Kumihimo (thread-gathering) is a traditional Japanese technique of braiding which produces colourful cords that serve both functional and decorative purposes. It is used to create obijime, a belt which holds the obi of a kimono in place, samurai armours, and even friendship bands! A whimsical introduction to the many stories and ideas that surround seascapes, Imaginarium: Over the Ocean, Under the Sea presents tactile and interactive works that encourage discovery through exploration and play. At SAM at 8Q, young people are invited to comb the shores and navigate the deep where they make the acquaintance of mysterious denizens and underwater wonders. We hope that, as protectors of the future, our young visitors will also think about the impact we have on the natural world, and of how, through inventive and wise ideas, we can save our earth and its awe-inspiring oceans.
