FREE Activities Galore for Families this Weekend as National Museum of Singapore turns 130 years old!

Media Invite

The National Museum of Singapore turns 130 years old on 12 October and everyone is invited to the big bash this coming weekend!

Back in 1887 on 12 October at 5pm, the 14th Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Frederick Weld, opened the Raffles Library and Museum at Stamford Road. The oldest of its kind in Singapore, the museum was then established to spur intellectual inquiry in the region. It grew alongside the country, survived the Japanese Occupation and has transformed into a socio-history and cultural institution that is well-loved by many. Today, the National Museum of Singapore continues to excite and inspire visitors with its innovative ways of presenting history and the national collection.

It's FREE admission to ALL galleries from 12 to 15 October and there will be plenty to give both kids and adults entertained.

History buffs can discover the National Museum’s fascinating history, the building, its galleries and people behind it though art installations and guided tours led by the museum's curators and docents. Families can enjoy live music performances, shop at a retro market, while kids can indulge in craft activities and cupcake decoration.

Here are some of the activities happening over the four days of celebration:

1. An Art Trail

Embark on a special journey through a suite of art installations sited in and around the museum. Relook the various sites and spaces of the museum, reacquaint yourselves with the museum as a building and social space, and re-examine the stories told in its galleries.

La Bétonnière Boule à Facettes
12 – 22 Oct | 6.30pm – 11pm | Front of Museum

I think the video sells itself. How often can one boogie away with the kids under the stars with a cement truck acting as a giant disco ball???

As part of the museum’s 130th anniversary celebrations, three special scents have been introduced to Story of the Forest, an interactive art installation by teamLab that is housed within the museum’s unique Glass Rotunda.

The first scent, Welcome Flowers, greets visitors as they enter the upper rotunda, bringing to life the constellation of flowers that cascade from the top of the dome structure. As visitors make their way through the passage, they will encounter the second scent, Story of the Forest, as they interact with the flora and fauna within the virtual forest. The digital landscape comes to life at the base of the Glass Rotunda, where visitors will experience the third scent Relaxing Forest, as they witness trees flourishing before their eyes, as well as playful animals coming out of their hiding places amid the foliage.
