6 Places in Singapore to bring Kids to Celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival 2018 this Weekend


This year's Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节) falls on 24 September 2018, which is a Monday. This means that the bulk of the Mid-Autumn activities will be taking place this 22 & 23 September weekend.

And since the Mid-Autumn Festival is all about spending time with the family, parading lanterns and of course, gorging on mooncakes, what better way to spend this weekend than take your pick from the list of activities below and bring the kiddos out to soak in the festivities!


Depending on your preference, there are SIX to choose from:

Mid-Autumn @ Gardens by the Bay

Lantern sets depicting the fantastical will adorn Gardens by the Bay this Mid-Autumn Festival. Based on the theme “Autumn of Fantasies” (奇幻之秋), these marvellous lantern sets depict a diversity of worlds unfettered by reality, from mythical creatures to larger-than-life flora and fauna. Adding to the atmosphere is a bustling marketplace at the Supertree Grove, where visitors can enjoy cultural performances, a food street, and a showcase of traditional Chinese crafts.

Celebrate an Autumn of Fantasies with dazzling lantern sets that bring together imaginary worlds and natural wonders. In “Leaping over the Dragon’s Gate”, our widest lantern set to date spanning 70m across water, carps brave the strong currents as they swim upstream towards the Dragon’s Gate in the hope of turning into a dragon. Another highlight is “The Phoenix and the Peony”, which symbolises nobility, harmony and affluence.

GARDEN RHAPSODY: TALES OF THE MOON

Adding to the Mid-Autumn festivities is a special edition of the Garden Rhapsody! Immerse yourself in a breathtaking choreography of lights and music inspired by legends and songs of the moon.

Curated by co-organiser, the National Arts Council, the free nightly cultural programme will present opportunities for visitors to enjoy and be inspired by Singapore’s rich heritage. Appreciate vibrant and diverse traditional arts performances by home-grown arts groups of different genres, cultures and ages, and bond over the creative interpretations of the theme Fantastic Traditions.

COLONNADE OF LIGHTS

The Colonnade transforms into a resplendent gallery of lanterns, each hand-painted with love by the community.

FUN ZONE

Soak in the festivities and celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival in Chinatown, where traditional Chinese culture comes alive. This year street light-up will depict the stories of Chinatown where our forefathers came to Singapore in search for better life and opportunities. In addition, be enchanted by the decorations of Chinatown as New Bridge Road, Eu Tong Sen Street, South Bridge Road and the inner streets of Chinatown are adorned with colourful traditional lanterns.

Festive Trade Fair and Festive Bazaar

During the Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival, visitors can bask in the festivities, walk along the bustling festive street stalls and shop for festive goodies. Be spoilt for choice as over 300 festival stalls will offer a dazzling variety of festive treats like moon cake, pomelos, lanterns, handicrafts, tea and more.


Nightly Stage Shows
Date: Now until 24 September 2018
Time: 8pm – 10:30pm
Venue: Kreta Ayer Square
Gather around for the nightly performances at Kreta Ayer Square during the Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations. Even today, the Square remains a popular gathering point for local Chinese communities. Catch and be entertained by the animated and dynamic Chinese cultural acts, folk songs, and music and dance numbers by local entertainers and overseas performing troupes.

Mass Lantern Walk
Date: 23 September 2018
Time: 7pm – 10 pm
Venue: Starting point – Kreta Ayer Square| Ending point – Along New Bridge Road (Main Stage in front of Lucky Chinatown)
Enjoy a fun night out with your family and friends with your creative lanterns as you join in the Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival 2018 Mass Lantern Walk that is open to the general public. Immerse yourself in the festive spirit as you soak in the leisurely-paced lantern parade procession under the full moon and the dazzling displays around Chinatown. Don’t forget the impressive acts of the dragon dance troupes, energetic cheerleaders and the percussion band along the way! The lantern walk will conclude with stage performances, pyrotechnics and fireworks display in the heart of Chinatown.

Release a Wish of Love

Moonfest – A Mid-Autumn Celebration is an annual Chinese traditional arts festival held in celebration of the Mid-Autumn festival. Lantern Walkabout

This year’s festival presents an exciting weekend of offerings suitable for the young and the young at heart, including heritage trails, mooncake tasting, lantern-making workshops, storytelling of Mid-Autumn tales, performances ranging from the traditional to the contemporary, and more. Join in the fun at Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival on 22 and 23 September 2018 to learn more about the history and cultural significance of this widely celebrated festival!


The Memorial Hall’s thematic lantern installation also promises to make for great photo-moments under the stars. Featuring lanterns from across Southeast Asia, the festive installation celebrates Singapore’s chairmanship of ASEAN this year. The lantern installation will be on display from 1 September to 8 October 2018.

Unveiling Singapore’s Largest Mooncake

Be a part of history in the making, as the Memorial Hall attempts to set a new record for the Largest Mooncake in Singapore! Join our partners and visitors in commemorating this historical moment as the Memorial Hall unveils Singapore’s first giant mooncake measuring a whopping 1.8 metres in diameter. Be sure to snap a photo with the record-breaking mooncake, and savour a piece of it!
The giant mooncake is Halal-certified.

Snowskin Mooncake Workshop
