Tech Saturday 2017: 6 Activities for Families at the Ultimate Tech Carnival

Sponsored Post

It is hard to deny that we are truly living in a world of tech today. Like it or not, tech is here to stay so why not embrace it and maximise it to suit our needs? That is precisely what Tech Saturday is all about.

Contrary to its name, Tech Saturday is not taking place only on a Saturday. In fact, the ultimate carnival for all tech fans has been UPSIZED! this year and will take at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre over 2 days (29 & 30 April 2017). And yes, admission is FREE for all!

An event under IMDA’s Smart Nation Innovations Week, the tech carnival promises something experiential for everyone – both the young and senior, and the tech-savvy. Through fun-learning tinkering stations, cool demos and innovative tech and media workshops, adults and kids can learn how technology can make positive impact on the way we work, live and play. In addition, visitors can experiment with and witness how technology is accessible and easy-to-adopt.

Whether you are young, young at heart, tech newbie or a technophile, there are plenty of interesting activities in store for everyone. And if you are planning to bring the kids down this weekend, here are 6 activities you must not miss!

1. Tinker Space

Tinker Space features more than 25 fun-learning tinkering stations put together for both kids and adults. Get hands on with technology and discover how technology can be simple, fun and innovative.

Some of the cool activities include creating your own game through Bloxels, picking up coding skills as you take part in a card game, and experiencing how 3D zoetrope and hologram animation can trick your eyes.

As the Tinker Space is a prototype demo space as well as a marketplace, visitors can also look forward to bringing home cool tinker gadgets such as electronic toys, DIY electronic projects, and 3D printing pens.

2. Work Sheds

Discover coding in colours, Build a robot, Play an Arduino piano or Dream your own virtual world at the Worksheds. With over 30 tech and media workshops to choose from, all I can say is it will be tough to choose one!

And the great news is all sessions are free! Registration is compulsory so do sign up soonest to avoid disappointment. Check out the full list Worksheds activities and schedules HERE. You can also sign up for the sessions at the same link.

3. Arena+

Arena+ is the place to be if you wish to get close to the action of controlling gadgets and e-sports.

Visitors get to fly a drone at the Drone Try-out Zone and pilot their way through obstacles. Or you can cheer on the competitors in the Remote-Control Tank Battlefield competition (taking place on Sat, 29 Apr).

Itching to play some game? Sign up and participate in the inaugural Tech Saturday Super Cup Challenge 2017 and you may just have a share of the prize pool worth of $3,000 for each game. Choose from FIFA 17 or ArmaGallant. The latter is a brand new game created by local game developer Rock Nano Global and it combines the worlds of deck-building, real-time strategy and multi-player online battle arena video games.

4. Interactive Showcase

Have you dreamt of being a digital innovator? Head to the Interactive Showcase zone and get inspired by the interesting interactive projects. Speak to the innovators behind these works and find out how their ideas were made into prototypes, creating the next-generation technology products.

Learn how a 3D-printed solar car help sustain the environment, and how an autonomous underwater robot can operate remotely to track, search and rescue. These award-winning innovations are the works of local students – undergraduates from NUS and NTU Engineering!

Visitors will also be treated to a dazzling display of Augmented/ Virtual Reality (AR/ VR) - Unleash your creativity and imagination as you draw in 3-dimensional space, or experience a scientific dive through a prototype developed by local VR start-up Hiverlab and DHI Water and Environment, in collaborations with PIXEL Labs.

5. Hackathon

DAY 1: “FIRST LEGO LEAGUE JUNIOR” (For kids aged 6 – 9)
For kids who love creating with LEGO, they will be tasked to dive into the wonders of the animal kingdom using basic engineering concepts to build a model made of LEGO elements and will learn to present information through a Show Me poster.

*Registration is compulsory. Click here to register and to find out more.

DAY 2: “NATIONAL CODING CHAMPIONSHIP” (For Students 13 – 18 years old)
A Coding Competition done in e-sports fashion where participants write codes that control the Artificial Intelligence (AI) of their troops. The most talented team that can defeat their opponents in a fantasy gaming environment will win the championship title.

*Registration is compulsory. Click here to register and to find out more.

6. IMDA Lab on Wheels

Hop on to the mobile lab and experience technology in a different space! There will be two different buses at the carnival - a Workshop and a mobile Fabrication Lab bus.

Converted into tech tinkering workspaces, the mobile Fabrication Lab bus will be showcasing 3D printers, laser cutters, virtual reality, social robots, Intel Realsense and many more, where participants can get a chance to experiment with these tools and new technologies through play. The bus is configured in a classroom format that provides a conducive environment for participants to have a better learning experience.

Each workshop runs for 50 minutes and registration is compulsory. Visit HERE for the full schedule of workshops and to sign up.

In addition to all of the above activities happening, keep a lookout for roving cosplayers who will be decked out in superhero costumes. Oh, and just in case your kids love to don a superhero outfit too, there will also be 3D printing of super hero costumes!

Double the Fun and Triple the Experience, Tech Saturday 2017 is shaping up to be ultimate fun-filled tech carnival for the whole family.

SEE YOU THERE!
