22 Activities for Kids this May Day Long Weekend


For parents who have primary school-going children, this Labour Day long weekend probably marks the start of some serious mugging before the mid-year exams (WAIL!!!). If you are not in this category, lucky you!

But no matter what, kids need a break too - okay I admit, me too! - so what better way to enjoy a breather away from the books than taking your pick from these activities on offer?

Into its 12th year, National Heritage Board’s signature Singapore HeritageFest promises yet another edition of heritage fun! Spanning five weekends from 17 April to 18 May, Singapore HeritageFest 2015 will be the largest edition to date. In the festival’s spirit of celebration and discovery, explore familiar places, rediscover the lesser known and forgotten stories behind their past, and come to appreciate them in a whole new way.

Tanjong Pagar Railway Station Open House

Istana Open House
1 May 2015

The Istana grounds is open to the public five times a year. Admission to the Istana grounds is free for Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents. Other visitors are required to pay an entrance fee of $1 per person. Entrance to the grounds is via the main gate at Orchard Road.

There will be a variety of performances on the grounds during the Open House.  For an entrance fee of $2, visitors could tour selected function rooms in the Istana building and view a special display of gifts presented to the President and the Prime Minister. There are also guided tours of the Istana building, conducted by the Preservation of Sites and Monuments (PSM) volunteers. Istana souvenirs are also sold at the Open House. All proceeds from the sale of the souvenirs and the entrance fees collected are donated to charity.

As part of the festivities, children 12 years and below fly for free with every full priced adult ticket purchased! The first 500 children also get to enjoy a free carnival ride or game. Families can also get crafty at the Maker's Market, or discover new stories at the Book Exchange. There'll also be a Food Fare selling everything from ice cream to freshly brewed coffee, as well as carnival rides and games from the little ones! Imaginarium: A Voyage of Big Ideas, an exhibition for everyone and anyone with a head for ideas and a heart for adventure, is the new edition of SAM’s much-loved annual contemporary art exhibition for children, begun in 2010 and now in its fifth year. In the spirit of SG50, this year's exhibition is inspired by the crescent moon on the Singapore flag, a symbol of a young nation on the rise and with it, the capacity to dream big and think large. What might we be able to envision and aspire to? What worlds could we imagine for ourselves and create for others? Particularly targeted at children, Imaginarium is both immersive and interactive with hands-on activities at every turn.

The newly-opened LKCNHM is a must-visit for families! With 20 zones spread over two floors, the Museum traces the history of life on earth - from the microscopic to the enormous, and from the awkward to the awesome. This memorial exhibition chronicles the life and political career of Singapore’s first Prime Minister and founding father Lee Kuan Yew. It also highlights the ideals and convictions that shaped Mr Lee and his generation of leaders. Through a selection of photographic images and audiovisual recordings, as well as artefacts from the National Collection, the exhibition chronicles his political journey and pays tribute to his contributions.
