Top 13 Blog Posts in 2013

5 comments :
(Daddy reflects)

You know something? I still haven't figured out this little concept known as Time. It just seemed slightly more than a day ago that I was happily compiling the blog posts that mattered dearly to me for Year 2012, and now I have to do it all over again for 2013??? How on earth did we get here so fast?!?!

So if there one thing constant in life, it is that Time is not constant and never will. So the only thing we can do is to live our lives to the fullest, spend every possible moment with our loved ones and look ahead to the brand new year of 2014.

Here are 13 memories over the course of the year that had helped to shape our 2013.

The beginning of the year saw the start of new school experiences - Primary School for Ayd and Nursery for Ale - for the monkies. And it turned out to be rather eventful. Ayd fell asleep on his first day at school while Ale practically cried herself hoarse for the first three days of school. One year on, they have adapted well to school life and I suspect they will be looking forward to the new school term. Minus the waking up early part, that is.

Thanks to our hunt for the old playgrounds around Singapore, we got ourselves featured on the first episode of '100% Singapore', an eight-part series on Channel U which will take viewers to the heart and soul of what the Singaporean identity is all about and explore what really constitutes the sense of "Singaporean-ness".

If you have missed the show, check out our segment in the video below!

One of the milestones for our blog this year has got be Ayd's first blog post. From the snapping, editing, cropping and uploading of the photos to the typing of the text, he accomplished every step on his own. Sure-fire way to improve one's composition writing skills I say!

In my only art & craft-related post of the year, the boys discovered the joy in making their own shrinky dinks as Teacher's Day gifts. And they love it so much that they still clamour to make some every now and then!

And speaking of Teacher's Day presents, who can forget Ale's absolute piece of gem back then: I asked Ale for her N1 Chinese teacher's name as I needed to label the Teacher's Day gifts. And she replied, "Her name is 午安老师!" I almost died.

As part of Social Media Week Singapore 2013, a panel discussion session titled 'Growing Up on Facebook' was conducted and I was honoured to be invited as one of the panel speakers for the discussion forum. It was my first time fielding questions as a panelist and I have to admit I was rather nervous initially. But I'm glad that everything turned out fine in the end, and this probably had a hand in leading up to an newspaper article which was published in The Sunday Times. Which in turn led to another stint as a guest panelist at a Breastfeeding Seminar organised by Philips AVENT.

During the June School Holidays, we were very blessed to have the opportunity to collaborate with Scoot and Destination New South Wales, with the latter planning a kick-ass itinerary for our family. To say that we had the time of our lives would be understating the level of fun we had.

It was also during this trip that Ayd took over our Instagram account for the entire duration of our holiday, with him snapping photos and conjuring up captions for them. And I have to say they were very well-received!

7. LEGOLAND Water Park and Hotel

With LEGOLAND Malaysia Water Park and LEGOLAND Hotel Malaysia opening in 2013, we were extremely fortunate to have the chance to soak up all the fun at the 2 newest properties in LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort. Let's just say the monkies will find every excuse imaginable to request for a trip up north from now on.

My personal fave blog post of 2013? There are quite a number of them, with a close contender being the post on 20 Things I Learned from my Kids. But if i had to pick one, it will have to be this '7 Phrases' one, mainly because I was amazed by how much it struck a chord with many parents when I first published it.

Some special magic fairy dust arrived all the way from Hong Kong Disneyland during the September School Holidays, which made the school break even more special.

We checked out its newest three theme areas - Toy Story Land, Grizzly Gulch and Mystic Point - and Ash & Ayd even penned reviews for them. Nothing like working to pay for one's vacation, no?

I had the most kick-ass Birthday celebration, all thanks to Montigo Resorts Nongsa who had so graciously put us up in one of their absolutely gorgeous villas. Our three-storey villa came with our very own infinity pool, with the monkies falling in love with the humongous Kids Club as well. Frankly, one night was all too short for us as this has to rank as one of the best holiday experiences that our family has had all these while.

The monkies and I are always on the prowl for playgrounds and parks in Singapore so it was an absolute joy to share this article with our readers. One unexpected find of the year was the Alexandra Canal Linear Park, which hides 5 playgrounds along the entire stretch! But my fave outdoor park of the lot has got to the Battleship Playground at Sembawang Park. Pure awesome-ness.

With more than 100,000 views for 2013, this post has the honour of being the Most Popular Blog Post of 2013. Which goes to show that parents are always on the constant lookout for restaurants that satisfy both their palate and their children's, complete with ample activities within the restaurants to keep them occupied.

And while you are at it, I have came up with a list of 8 Waiting Games to Play with Kids in a Restaurant too. Check them out HERE.

The wifey & I celebrated 10 years of union back in March by ditching the monkies and heading up to Melaka for a one-night couple getaway. We shopped, dined and basked in the enjoyment of each other's exclusive company. Sweet.

And to top everything off, I was extremely chuffed at being named as one of the Top 10 Lifestyle Bloggers in Singapore  by The New Paper back in July. So as we welcome 2014, we would like to say a big Thank You to you, our dear readers for your support all these while.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, and here's wishing you and your loved ones a mega fantastic 2014!

Gimme Sum-more at Dim Dim

No comments :
Media Invite
(Daddy munches)

Hands up if you know where Marina Link is. I most certainly didn't and only found out that it is actually Marina Square's basement integrated walkway which connects the mall to Esplanade MRT Station seamlessly. And it turns out that there are actually quite a fair number of dining options at Marina Link too!

One such restaurant is Dim Dim - The Hong Kong Pantry, a local-based dim sum no-frills cafe that serves up 100% handmade dim sum.

And when it comes to dim sum, you can be darn sure that my monkies will among the first in line... and salivating. Okay okay, so even I cannot never resist a bite (or two) of some delectable dim sum.

Not when all the dim sum were laid out so invitingly.

To quench our thirst for dim sum, we first had a round of Hong Kong Milk Tea (S$2.60). It was pretty standard; adequately milky but not overly sweet.

The monkies were crying out in hunger by now, so it was a good thing that our meal started off with one of Dim Dim's arguably best dish of the lot.

The Baked BBQ Honey Pork Bun Coated with Crispy Butter (S$3.90 for 3) is much like the po luo bao, crispy on the outside with melted sugar and cream on top of the bun and savoury inside with char siew meat. Simply put, if there is only one dish you order at Dim Dim, this is it! It was so good that I only manage to snag one miserable morsel before the monkies devoured them in record quick time.

The Deep-fried Shrimp in Beancurd Skin Roll (S$4.60 for 3) is always a must-order whenever we have dim sum, primarily because the dish is one of the wifey's faves. And her verdict? Pretty decent, although I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the generous serving of shrimps within.

How can one get away without ordering egg tarts at a dim sum restaurant? Not us apparently, as the Mini Egg Tarts (S$3.60 for 3) were too fluffy and yummy for us to pass up!

One interesting dish we sampled was the Fried Prawns with Mango and Mayonnaise which each came stuffed with one prawn and a generous amount of mango and mayonnaise.

Personally, I never fancied the clashing tastes of sweet and salty so this dish did not really appeal to me. And neither did it appeal to the monkies I suspected... thanks to the next dish which was plonked right before them.

Mention chee cheong fun and watch my monkies' eyes light up in delight. Good chee cheong fun is hard to find, even more so for those with youtiao (or dough fritters) within them. The Steamed Cheong Fun with Chinese Dough Fritters (S$3.60) was served with a special peanut and seafood sauce, which made the silky smooth chee cheong fun all the more delectable. Just ask Ash.

The Steamed Prawn Dumpling 'Ha Kau' (S$4.20 for 3) did not exactly wow our socks off, but proved to be of an acceptable standard.

The Cuttlefish and Peanut Congee (S$5.00 per bowl) was totally a different story altogether.

It emerged as one of the monkies' fave of the lot and in particular, Ale's. For some reason, she displayed great affinity with the bowl of congee as she downed her share - and mine! - without any of my or the wifey's prompting.

To round off our meal, we had Steamed Custard Bun (S$4.20 for 3) or 'Liu Sha Bao'.

The moment I sank my teeth into one, I understood why the Steam Custard Bun is such a big deal at Dim Dim. For one, the handmade skin of the bun tasted fluffy enough with the custard filling being neither too watery or too dry but yet flavourful with a tinge of sweetness and saltiness at the same time.

While some of the dishes were a tad standard and average, there were a few that were well executed and stood out, like the Baked BBQ Honey Pork Bun Coated with Crispy Butter, Steamed Cheong Fun with Chinese Dough Fritters and Steamed Custard Bun. At least they brought an immense sense of satisfaction to all of us, especially the kiddos!

Oh, and do check out their affordable High Tea Set Menu if you are there between 3pm and 5pm, from Mondays to Fridays!

These Shoes are made for (more) Walking

No comments :
Product Review
(Daddy reviews)

Ever since Ale got her brand new pair of pediped shoes, her 2 older brothers had been casting envious glances at her feet every now and then. No, they weren't wishing for an exact pair of Sadie Brown Mary Jane but rather, a pediped shoe to call their own... especially since Ash's feet had their first taste of pediped when he was a toddler.

Well, someone must have heard their prayers because looked what arrived in the mail.

Ash received the Saturn Sneaker (Silver/Black/Lime) from pediped's Flex range and he totally fell in love with the colour combination immediately.

For me though, I preferred what laid within the shoes, or soles to be precise. You can read more about pediped's innovative Flex system HERE but what I really love about its shoes is this - each pair of Flex shoes comes with additional insoles that can be inserted for a snug fit and then removed for room as the child’s feet grow. This allows parents to adjust the fit of shoes to prolong wear, and save more money!

A pair of Delmar Blue Sandal - also from the Flex range - was what welcomed Ayd. Bet you can't tell that it came in his favourite colour.

The sandal is unlike the usual sandals, as it comes a scruff-resistant closed toe guard which is great news for active children it will help to protect their little toes. The top part of the shoes has a combination of textile and mesh lining which makes the sandals airy and roomy.

And the first thing that the boys remarked when they put on the shoes? That the shoes felt remarkably lightweight! And it is a good thing too, since the last thing I would want is for them to be dragging two blocks of bricks when we are outdoors.

And speaking of outdoors, it is common knowledge that how dirty shoes are synonymous with children so I was pleasantly surprised to find out that both pair of shoes are machine washable! So this is it - looks like the shoes are all set to take on all the abuse the boys can dish out.

Oh, and add Ale to the mix as well!
