Cavalia in Singapore: Not Just Horsepower

Media Invite

For the past few weeks, you have read about it - one White Theatre Tent mushrooming beside Marina Bay Sands, as well as the arrival of 50 magnificent horses and 36 riders, aerialists, acrobats, dancers and musicians. And yesterday, all of these culminated in Cavalia's first-ever premiere show in Singapore (and Asia).

A stirring exhibition of equestrian and acrobatic arts, Cavalia is the brainchild of Normand Latourelle, one of the co-founders of famed Cirque du Soleil. Like Cirque, Cavalia invites the audience into a wonderous world, complete with its sprawling 50-metre stage backed by a 60-metre screen - and holds everyone there for over two hours (with a 20-minute intermission sandwiched in between).

Of course, the real draws of Cavalia are the horses. And my word, they are such majestic animals. Because quite frankly, there is no effective way to describe the sight of the equine performers as they trot, canter, and gallop around the sandy-floored stage.

Plot-wise, there is not much of a storyline to begin with. The different acts are linked through mankind's deep connection with horses, with references to varied cultures like European, Asian and those of the Americas.

I do not want to give away the show too much because I believe this is one show that should be enjoyed as a first time experience. But what you can expect are acrobatics and aerials galore, exceptional horse-riding with the riders balancing on or jumping around them and, quite often saddle-less and completely free.

It is really hard to pinpoint my fave segment in Cavalia, but the trick riding one comes pretty close.

The exciting, comical and dangerous escapades of trick riding had everyone of us in awe, as the riders galloped across the stage in such a seemingly effortless but yet risky manner.

All of them were just so agile that they made it seem like a catwalk.

But all applause paled in comparison when Troubadour the miniature horse made his grand entrance.

It may just be a fleeting 5-second cameo, but Troubadour certainly stole hearts of many in the audience especially Ale who squealed, "So CUTE leh!"

Keep your eyes peeled too, for the moment when part of the performing stage is flooded with water. And with such beauties galloping through the water, no words are really necessary.

The horses, with manes flowing and coats gleaming, and the humans, with jaw-dropping acrobatics and stunts - they all made it look so easy! And together with the superb changing backdrop and live band, I enjoyed them all.

But what I really enjoyed the most was the reaction of my monkies... and that the reaction of some of the horses can really be cheeky too.

Ash's eyes were transfixed onto the stage, never leaving it for even a single second. He let out a 'Wow' and clapped his hands in delight whenever some of the stunts blew him away. Ayd was much subdued - probably because he was feeling tired - but he was kept equally spell-bound as well. As for Ale, I had initially feared that the dim lighting and loud music may intimidate her. But it turned out that she thoroughly enjoyed the show, not so much for the acrobatics portions but the sight of horses galloping round the stage. And the occasional exclamation of "Pa, the horse's hair is so long and pretty... just like mine!"

“Breathtaking” is often an overused word but in Cavalia, it is inexplicably beautiful and intoxicating with a sense of feeling of humans treating horses with love and respect. And the animals reciprocating too.

Whether you are a horse lover, a non-horse lover, or a parent, this is one show that you cannot afford to miss. Cavalia is truly a show like no other. That's how spectacular it is.

Hi Kevin. I can't wait to go since the clip you posted when writing about the tents. The tickets Will add up quite a bit for our family of 5 though. Any idea which of the cheaper category is still watchable? When I was a student, I bought the cheapest ticket to watch les mis but I might as well not be there.

Hi,

Thanks for supporting our blog! :)

We were seated somewhere in the middle portion for our show. But I had climbed all the way up to the top of the spectator stand and it gave quite a good view of the entire stage.

I was told that except for the cheapest seats which have partially obstructed views (due to the columns used to prop up the tent), the seating area has been designed to give a good view of the performance regardless of the seat category.

Hope it helps!

I notice you have a lot of Photographs on your blog for this show. You shot them and they do allow you to bring a camera in to shoot? ( Minus the flash that is for sure as it would spoke the horses) But they allow photography as you got some really good shots of the performance and it does not look like you used a phone to shoot. Thanks.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for dropping my my blog!

Photo-taking is discouraged during the show.

The photos that I took from the Cavalia show were from an earlier preview session that the media was given.

Hope it clarifies. Thanks!

Thanks for the clarification... guess I have to leave my cam at home heh..

Thanks Kevin for the reply on tickets.

Hi Kevin,
Where is best to park?
Thanks
LL

Cheekiemonkies said...

Hi Lileng,

Best place to park is the open air carpark beside Marina Bay City Gallery. If it is full, MBS or Marina Bay City Link Mall is good too.

Hi rina here i would really love to watch cavalia with hubby and my little one who is only 1yrs old do you have any advise if it is suitable for my little one as he can go cranky at times was thinking also which alse seat would you suggest if its suitable!?
Tia!

Cheekiemonkies said...

Hi Rina,

Thanks for dropping by my blog! I think a one-year-old might not be able to sit through the entire show, as he may not be able to fully understand the show as yet.

As for seating, I think tickets of the $88 and $98 range will be able to offer a good enough view.

Hope it helps!

gerry said...

Hi,

In your opinion, the show is suitable for what age group of kids? Thinking to bring my two years old along But am afraid they are too young too. Do you think it is suitable for their age? TIA.

Cheekiemonkies said...

Hi gerry,

I think 3 years and up will be a good age as they will be more aware and more likely to be attentive to the show.

Hope it helps!

Hi Kevin,

We are going for the show tonight. I wonder if there is any eateries nearby?

Cheekiemonkies said...

Hi Lys,

Oops, I only just saw your comment. Sorry about it!

Hope you and your family enjoyed the show!

We ate at Marina Bay Link Mall.

Cavalia will close on 5 Oct 2014 , the final performance is 12pm. The show was extended twice and i have yet gotten tickets for it. I tried to win through its sponsors Fuji Xerox to no avail. My son has been bugging me ever since he saw the tentage when we were at that area during the NTUC kite festival. It These are very pricey tickets to indulge my 5 year old but i really hope to make his dream come true!
